Engineers will learn the intricacies of secondary steel making and the procedures for making 100% refined steel in state of the art ladle metallurgy environment. Some of the key processes that they will master include the following:
1-Homogenization – Homogenization of chemical composition and temperature of liquid steel in the ladle
2-Deoxidization or killing – Removal of oxygen
3-Superheat adjustment – Heating of the liquid steel to a temperature suitable for continuous casting
4-Ferro alloys and carbon additions – Making adjustments in the chemistry of liquid steel.
5-Vacuum degassing – Removal of hydrogen and nitrogen
6-Decarburization – Removal of carbon for meeting the requirement of certain grades of steel.
7-Desulfurization – Reduction of sulfur concentrations as low as 0.002%
8-Micro cleanliness – Removal of undesirable nonmetallic elements
9-Inclusion morphology – Changing the composition of remaining impurities to improve the microstructure of the steel
10-Mechanical properties – Improvement in toughness, ductility, and transverse properties
